Configuration of array-fed imaging reflector antenna for 21-GHz band broadcasting satellite

2013
NHK is developing Super Hi-Vision, a form of ultra-high-definition TV. In order to transmit multiple SHV programs and other advanced forms of broadcasting, satellite broadcasting in the 21-GHz band is expected. We have proposed an array-fed reflector antenna as part of a wide band and high power transponder combining outputs of the each element through high power amplifiers that are close to the elements. The proposed antenna is reconfigurable in order to exploit the satellite's limited resources, and it has the ability to control its radiation pattern as a way of mitigating fading. To confirm the feasibility of this reconfigurable antenna system in the space environment, we are in the process of fabricating an engineering model of an array-fed imaging reflector antenna. In this report, we describe the design and fabrication of the phase shifter and attenuator MMIC for the engineering model. Furthermore, we explore the possibility of the broadcasting satellite system by presenting an example layout for the satellite onboard system.
