Ablation of Al2O3f/Al2O3 Composites Under Oxyacetylene Torch Flame

2021
Continuous alumina fibers reinforced alumina matrix composites (Al2O3f/Al2O3 composites) were successfully synthesized via sol–gel procedure successfully and ablation behavior examined and compared utilizing oxyacetylene torch flame test. According to the findings, Al2O3f/Al2O3 composites had excellent ablation resistance without any visible pits, cracks, or holes. After ablation, the sample’s thickness and mass barely changed. After 120 s of ablation at 1800 °C, morphological characteristics of the surface of composite material did not change significantly. On the surface of composites, various signs of high-pressure gas erosion and high-temperature were observed as the ablation temperature increased. The delamination process occurred as the surface start to show the formation of molten black material. The composite’s surface became uneven after ablation at 2200 °C, revealing the black molten particles on a large scale, and the ablation area became increasingly visible.
