This report presents the vital registration data for events that took place in 1997 in Matlab Bangladesh. The data were collected by the Demographic Surveillance System of the International Center for Diarrheal Disease Research Bangladesh (ICDDR B). The surveillance area is divided into a Maternal and Child Health and Family Planning (MCH-FP) intervention area and a Comparison area which receives government services. The first chapter introduces the program. The second chapter evaluates population changes as presented in five accompanying tables. The third chapter discusses mortality and presents data on death distribution by age sex area month and cause in chart form. The fourth chapter examines fertility and presents data on the number of pregnancies and their outcomes age-fertility rates total fertility rates general fertility rates and gross and net reproduction rates. The fifth chapter focuses on trends in marriage and divorce. The sixth chapter provides data on migration as well as a discussion of trends in out-migration and in-migration.
