This opening chapter deliberately looks at care from the perspective of the consumer. Although in the past many services, especially public services, have been more orientated to the provider, major changes are now occurring. Lady Greengross initiates major themes that will reccur throughout the book and are reinforced by the subsequent chapter on ethical approaches to care.
