Multi-pollutant Removal System and Technology Evaluations

Separate pollutant removal devices are no longer the only solution for reducing the emissions of hazardous air pollutants, such as NOx, SO2, and PM, from coal-fired power plants (CFPPs). Multi-pollutant removal techniques are used worldwide to meet the increasingly strict emission standards. In particular, ultra-low emission (ULE) systems comprising several subsystems have been established to meet ULE standards. In this chapter, a background on the techniques used for simultaneous control of multiple pollutants is provided along with their mechanisms, influencing factors, and optimization methods. Four typical ULE technology routes are then introduced considering the load variations and typical pollutants. Finally, four typical applications of multi-pollutant removal techniques in CFPPs are discussed using ULE performance evaluations to guide the design, operation, and analysis of the system. Furthermore, economic and environment evaluations of the system and the resulting emission mitigation effects are also included.
