The article gives the standards of perfect bureaucrate defined by "enlightened" sovereigns, the transformations of the intellectual and theoretical training of the new administrators, their professional practices and their routes. After having evaluated the relationship between on the one hand the career profile of the civils servant, on the other hand their formation initial or acquired during their life, and their social origins, the article treats processes of social identification of these new come. The frequentation of the theatres and the concert halls, the meetings in "male circles", the attraction of Freemasonry are as many gestures elected by this emergent professional category in search of conclusive markers and social recognition.
