The Production of Galician Space: Ethnographic Interventions

2017
This chapter discusses the emergence of a Galician area studies, and the specific production of Galician spatiality, by anthropologists and other ethnographers since the early twentieth century. The idea of A Terra, or an integral bounded Galicia, was reinforced early on through areal categorizations; examinations of unequal relationships between Galicia and broader political-economic forces; the creation of compendia; and the examinations of border-making and border-crossings. The second broad set of writings consists of micro-studies that illustrate the nuances of everyday life in specific Galician locations or terras de. The third set of writings focuses on physical and cyber espazos-mani, or protest spaces, thus contributing to the making of differential spaces in Galicia.
