2-Hydroxy-5-Methoxy-3-Methyl-[1,4]-Benzoquinone and 5-Hydroxy-4-Methoxy-6-Methyl-7-Oxa- Bicyclo[4,1,0]hept-3-en-2-one. From the Fungus Xylaria Badia

Isolates of Xylaria badia was sub cultured in three 250 ml conical flasks containing aqueous 3% malt extract with 6% added glucose for 2 weeks. Master cultures were prepared from the sub cultures. Four Thompson bottles, each containing 1.0 dm 3 of culture medium were inoculated with the rest of the sub culture. The surface grown static cultures of Xalaria badia were extracted with ethyl acetate to give intimate mixtures of two compounds. Isolation, purification and characterisation of the components in the mixture gave 2-Hydroxy-5-methoxy-3-methyl-[1,4]-benzoquinone ,and 5-Hydroxy-4- methoxy-6-methyl-7-oxa-bicyclo[4,1,0]hept-3-en-2-one. The mycelium contained mainly fatty materials.
