A Compact KU/E Band Horn Antenna

2018
In this paper, an axially corrugated horn antenna loaded with a profile-shaped dielectric rod operating at Ku/E band is presented. The corrugation section based on conical horn mainly contributes to the radiation at Ku band, and is fed by a coaxial waveguide operated at TE ll mode. A circular waveguide constituting the inner conductor of the coaxial waveguide is excited with the fundamental TE ll mode, which is transformed into HE ll mode by inserting a profile-shaped dielectric rod in the circular waveguide. A launching horn at the end of the circular waveguide is used to improve the radiation efficiency of HE ll mode. By optimizing the dimensions of corrugations and shaped polyrod, similar radiation performance at Ku and E band can be obtained with coincided phase center. The simulation results show that within the operating frequency of interest, reflection coefficients are less than −15 dB at Ku and E band respectively. Similar peak gain and edge taper at 35 deg off the boresight direction with rotationally symmetric beams are achieved at two separate bands.
