Features, Trends and the Future

2019
Management studies is a young discipline in South Africa. The trends in knowledge production are the consequences of apartheid’s legacy. The trends demonstrate the slow pace of racial and gendered transformation in the research productive academy. The political transformation of South Africa is not speeding up transformation of the academy. Some groups of authors are more privileged than others in post-apartheid South Africa. This may be due to lack of opportunity, lack of capacity development and institutional cultures. Recruitment, retention and development of African and female researchers in management studies must be a policy priority to achieve racial and gender equity. Management as a discipline remains untransformed both racially and in terms of gender. Diversity is key to the sustainability of the discipline.
