Simulation and Business Process Management Notation in Support of Business Process Re-engineering

2021
The presented chapter aims to provide an overview of the possible representation techniques and languages used to describe processes in a Business Process Re-engineering context (BPR). Indeed, Business Process Management and Notation (BPMN) and Integration Definition for Function Modeling (IDEF0) are the most common ones. Simulation is another important tool in supporting BPR, since it provides different process output scenarios. In this view, this chapter aims to provide a methodology to automatically import in scale 1:1 a BPMN model into a simulation environment. Moreover, a careful literature review brought to light a small effort from the scientific community to deal with BPR in public administration, namely, Port environment and Health care. Hence, the authors discuss also the application of BPR in these two contexts and showed two case studies of BPR supported by BPMN and simulation in port and healthcare sectors.
