6.11 – Evolution of Hydropower in Spain

The steps of hydroelectric power development in Spain from the end of the nineteenth century to the end of 2008 are considered in this chapter focusing on the electric power and hydroelectric power, the strategic importance of hydroelectric power and the hydrology, river network, and hydroelectric development. Four periods of evolution of development are identified, highlighting the representative case of the Duero System and its evolution. The chapter concludes detailing the future of hydroelectric power in Spain.
