This paper discusses the application of machine (or artificial) intelligence intended to accelerate the development of technical expertise by novices. It provides evidence from various sources of the instructional effectiveness of this approach. It also discusses and provides examples of the monetary and operational value of individualizing instruction beyond that obtainable in classroom instruction and points to a future where learning and/or performance aiding is provided anytime, anywhere through a combination of human guidance and tutorial dialogues with computers.
