Biodegradability and property assessment of different categorized polymeric films

2021
Abstract Plastic waste generation has become a major issue for environmental pollution which needs an immediate solution. The present investigation emphasizes on the mechanical and degradability assessment of different HDPE, LDPE, HMHDPE, PLA films in its virgin form and its blended forms in comparison to biodegradable films made of LDPE and starch in different ratios. The mechanical property assessment was done in terms of quantification of results by stress/strain, tensile, stiffness, Young’s modulus and hardnessassessments. Morphological changes justifying nonuniformity was observed when the starch content was increased in the blends. The highest Young’s modulusand stiffness could be observed for the biodegradable films containing 60% of starch in its matrix. The tensile strength was found to be highest (11.48 MPa) for virgin LDPE film, however, weightloss percent and the visual deformation of the quality of the films were observed to enhance with the increase in starch in the matrix.
