Understanding the Interplay of Trust and Emotions

Reflecting world-wide interest in the importance of the role played by emotion in building and maintaining trust, the four papers in this symposium will address this topic from a wide range of differing but inter-connected perspectives. Presenters, who hail from five different countries, also provide an international perspective. In Paper 1, the authors develop a comprehensive conceptual framework for understanding the influence of affective processes in the development of interpersonal trust, arguing that different processes apply in inter- and intra-personal trust development. The authors of Paper 2 present the results of an experimental study where they used a dictator game paradigm to study how moral emotions and modes of information processing influence how people respond behaviorally and emotionally to exposure to trustworthy vs. untrustworthy behavior.
