Internal Vibration Absorption in Potential Structural Materials

1975
Machinery contains parts which are subjected to periodic stresses that result in acoustic waves which are set in motion within the solid components. When these waves reach a free surface, audible noise is produced. Since the energy in the waves is generally a small fraction of the total energy output of a machine, conversion of this energy to heat becomes an effective method of noise reduction with an insignificant accompanying temperature rise. Damping materials with good structural properties are required to fulfill this function.
