The invention relates to the production of genetically-modified, non-pathogenic organisms and a method for the improved preparation and isolation of trans-dihydroxycyclohexadiene carboxylic acids and/or derivatives thereof and the use of said trans-dihydroxycyclohexadiene carboxylic acids for the production of complex natural products and active agents.
