Melting System for Sewage Sludge

1990
In Japan, melting plants for sewage sludge are attracting great attention for their capability to produce molten slag and the possibility for their effective application. Several plants have already commenced operation. The authors have developed a new sewage sludge melting system, a melting after carbonizing sludge (MACS) system, using a swirling flow melting furnace. In 1987 a 50-t/d-scale demonstration furnace was installed, and since then the technique has been demonstrated. Heavy oil required to melt sludge in the plant is about 50 L/t-cake and the power about 83 kWh/t-cake.
