The invention relates to a method for monitoring an environment with several acoustic sensors (1, 2, 3, 4) which form a decentralized network (N), in which the sensors (1, 2, 3, 4) at least partially communicate with each other, wherein further process the sensors (1, 2, 3, 4) each detect acoustic signals which are based on sounds in the area, and the detected signals for performing a situation recognition. According to the method of the invention (2, 3, 4, 1) engages a respective sensor at least some of the sensors (1, 2, 3, 4), on the decentralized network (N) to the detected and / or processed signals from one or a plurality of adjacent sensors (1, 2, 3, 4) and takes account of these signals in the situation recognition, wherein an adjacent sensor (1, 2, 3, 4) detects signals which at least partially to the same noise as the respective of the sensor based (1, 2, 3, 4) detected signals.
