Design of an anti-jamming Appliqué for LTE-based military communications

2016
The United States Department of Defense (DoD) is contemplating the use of commercial technologies such as 4G/LTE (Long Term Evolution) for tactical edge communications because of several benefits offered by them. However, the greatest hindrance to the adoption of LTE for military communications is its lack of support to combat the presence of malicious jamming. In this paper, we propose an anti-jamming technique based on electronic null steering that can be used in tactical communications. We first develop a simple model for the proposed anti-jamming method, and use it to gain insights into the performance improvements gained from the technique. We provide extensive simulations to support the claims from the model. Finally, we describe implementation of the technique on an FPGA platform and highlight some of the challenges involved.
