What is the contribution that the Theory of difference can give to the comprehension of heresy? The device of heresy, created by the early church, has always expressed masculine logic, marginalizing the role of women within it. The analysis of the events concerning Margherita Porete and the Beguines movement shows how, over time, the accusation of heresy had become an instrument of control and constraint not so much on the doctrinal level, but on that of ordinary life. The independence of some female communities was in fact felt as a threat that could destabilize the male-centered society from within.
