Expected Weight Loss After the Sleeve

2021
There is strong and growing clinical evidence that metabolic and bariatric surgery have a significant impact on the overall metabolic health of recipients. As surgeons and other healthcare providers continue to strive to educate the public on the myriad of benefits, weight loss remains the primary motivation for those considering metabolic and bariatric surgery. Thus, it is important for the healthcare provider, and especially the metabolic and bariatric surgeon, to offer realistic expectations for weight loss for the patient seeking surgery. The sleeve gastrectomy is now the most commonly performed procedure, potentially due to its technical simplicity compared to other diversionary operations. This chapter will describe the expected weight loss after sleeve gastrectomy at various time points following surgery as well as cover special circumstances for specific groups of patients.
