Applications of Artificial Intelligence in the Energy Domain

2021
While the electric power grid of the twentieth century was simple, with one directional power flow from centralized generating plants through the transmission grid and the distribution grid to end user loads, the power grid of the twenty-first century has become increasingly complex. The incorporation of renewables and their management has proven a challenge for the prediction and control techniques developed in the last century. Since AI and ML techniques have shown promising ability to cope with complex systems in other engineering domains, researchers have been investigating their applicability to power systems. In this chapter, the application of the AI techniques, such as energy forecasting, predictive maintenance, AI-based control systems, intrusion detection systems, and other cyber security frameworks are discussed into energy systems is presented.
