Method and apparatus for identifying a co-channel interference

In a system (100) receiving a composite signal (1502) comprising a desired signal having desired data and an interfering signal having interference data, identification method of the interfering signal, comprising the steps of: a) demodulating (1404) the composite to produce the desired data signal; b) demodulating (1406) the desired signal to generate a desired reconstructed data; c) subtracting (1408) the desired reconstructed signal a composite signal at least partially demodulated interference signal to generate; characterized in that the method comprises: d) at least partially demodulating (1410) the interfering signal using a first scrambling code to produce a first demodulated interference signal; e) calculating (1412) a statistical interferer demodulated signal, wherein the statistic is a synchronization statistic; f) repeating steps d) to e) for generating a plurality of statistics of the demodulated signal, one statistic for each of a plurality of associated scrambling codes; eg) identifying (1416) the interfering signal based on a comparison of the plurality of statistics.
