Study on Relationship Between Expression of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor/Extracellular Signal-regulated Kinase and Metastasis in Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Tongue

2004
Objective The purpose of present study was to investigate the expression of epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase(ERK) in squamous cell carcinoma of tongue, and to ascertain the relationship among EGFR,ERK and metastasis. Methods Immunochemistry was employed to detect the expression of EGFR,ERK1/2,Ki-67 in 90 samples of squamous cell carcinoma of tongue. Results Among 90 cases of squamous cell carcinoma of tongne,26 cases had been proued to occur matastasic.Overexpression of EGFR activated ERK1/2 and ki-67 were detected in 93.33%(84/90),100.00%(90/90) and 100.00%(90/90) of squamous cell carcinoma of tongue respectively. The distribution of positive cells and intensity of reactivity were significantly greater in the deepest tumor region compared to superficial region. The results of statistical analyzed showed overexpression of EGFR and/or activated ERK1/2 were found to have correlation with proliferation and metastases of the tumor(P0.01).Conclusion EGFR and activated ERK1/2 are overexpression in squamous cell carcinoma of tongue, and both of them appears to be related to proliferation and metastasis of tumor.
