Global properties of galaxies along the Hubble sequence

2008
Global properties of a large sample of galaxies at z≃0 and as a function of Hubble type are discussed. These include: blue luminosity, linear size, color, total mass, H I mass. The sample is based on standard catalogs and hence is biased against both low surface brightness galaxies and high surface brightness compact objects. Two different samples are considered: 1) magnitude/diameter limited and 2) volume limited (V<3000 km/s). Some surprising findings are described, e.g., the total mass to blue luminosity ratio is, in the mean, constant for all disk and irregular galaxies, S0-Im.
