FSW tool design using TRIZ and parameter optimization using Grey Relational Analysis

Abstract In this work, a new tool geometry was designed which combines the geometry features of both conical and square pin profiled tool. The tool pin profile is made based on theory of inventive problem solving technique where the tool pin has four grooves on the conical pin. Effect of this tool design on mechanical properties of friction stir weldments of AA 2014-T6 aluminium alloy was studied. The process parameters were optimized using grey based Taguchi method. Experimental results have shown that optimal process parameters can be determined effectively so as to improve multiple weld quality characteristics through this approach.
