Architektura cmentarzy jako zapomniane sacrum

2007
Besides discussing the forms emerging in Polish cemeteries, those in small cities and villages in particular, the paper also presents the problem of historical, no more operating cemeteries and the issue of protection and revalorization of those. The said pertains not only to Catholic cemeteries, but also those of other denominations, war cemeteries and other ones. It can be rightly stated that the degree of development and awareness of the societies is reflected in the way of their attitude to necropolises, not only those destined for the co-religionists, but also ones that have simply left a mark on the history of the place. Polish space includes disgraceful instances of burial places being profaned after World War II. In many cities the evangelical, other protestant or Jewish cemeteries that are no more used are still in a poor shape of repair. The theme of the paper and the main issues has been presented quoting the example of a small town of Dzierzgon, situated about 30 km from Malbork in the Pomeranian Voivodship (Province). The place, one of rich and interesting history, is nicely located at the foot of a hill referred to as the Castle Hill. Specific features of the layout of the cemeteries in the urban structure, the role they play in the shaping of the space and the problems related to the architecture of historical and modern cemeteries have been presented.
