Commelina Species - A Review of its Weed Status and Possibilities for Alternative Weed Management in the Tropics

2007
The chiefly tropical family, Commelinaceae (Spiderwort or Dayflower family) has members extending into all the major continents. Commelina species and their biotypes have achieved major attention in agricultural production within the past few decades. The reasons for their success as an invasive weed are discussed, particularly those relating to indiscriminate agricultural practices including chemical overuse its pest significance and biodiversity. The results of published and unpublished data are summarized. The use of alternative control is emphasized and it is concluded that successful management of these weeds can only be achieved by a multi-component approach.
