Integrating quantitative and qualitative measures with neuropsychological assessment and intervention

2020
Abstract This chapter discusses the theoretical foundations for integrating quantitative and qualitative measures in the neuropsychological assessment of children and adults. Two ways are proposed: 1. A qualitative analysis of the structure of psychometric measures, that is, a list of possible defects in each task fulfillment. 2. A system of scoring for Luria’s tests, based on the normative data for different age groups, the qualitative analysis of each test fulfillment, and the correction of possible defects. This system of patient performance scoring is designated for both children and adults. The proposed approach for integrating quantitative and qualitative measures in the neuropsychological assessment of adults is illustrated by a case study of a brain-damaged patient, done by the author in a rehabilitation service in the United States.
