Synthesis, structure and reactivity of a carborane-fused silylene 1-{[PhC(N t Bu) 2 ]Si}-1,2-C 2 B 10 H 11

Abstract A carborane-fused silylene 1-{[PhC(N t Bu) 2 ]Si}-1,2-C 2 B 10 H 11 ( 2 ) has been prepared and structurally characterized from an equimolar reaction of 1-Li-1,2-C 2 B 10 H 11 with [PhC(N t Bu) 2 ]SiCl ( 1 ) in Et 2 O. The reactions of 2 with elemental sulfur and benzophenone afforded the corresponding o -carborane substituted silanethione ( 3 ) and silaoxirane ( 4 ), respectively. On the other hand, the reaction of 2 with 2-benzoylpyridine led to the isolation of an unexpected compound 5 featuring a SiC 2 O 2 five-membered ring. All new compounds were characterized by multiple NMR spectroscopic techniques and single-crystal X-ray analyses.
