Types of Placenta Previa and Pregnancy Outcome

2011
Objective:To investigate the association between type of placenta previa (PP) and pregnancy outcome.Methods:1121 pregnant women with PP and clinical data were retrospectively analyzed from November 2005 to March 2010 in the West China Second University Hospital.According to antepartum ultrasound examination, the patients were divided into complete PP group, partial PP group and marginal PP group.Obstetric risk factors, maternal pregnancy outcomes and perineonate outcomes were compared among three groups. Results:The proportion of previous cesarean sections in complete PP group was significantly higher than the other two groups, and the gravidity of complete PP group was more than that of partial PP group (P0.05).Compared with partial PP group and marginal PP group, the proportions of antepartum and postpartum hemorrhage, prenatal and postpartum blood transfusion, placenta adhesion were significantly higher in complete PP group (P0.05);Women in complete PP group and partial PP group were found to have significantly higher uterine suppressive therapy.Occurrence rate of preterm delivery and placenta accrete in complete and partial PP group was also higher than that in marginal PP group(P0.05);There were significantly difference in newborn hospitalization, perinatal asphyxia and birth weight of term infant by pair wise comparisons among the three groups. Conclusions: Pregnancy outcome is related to the types of placenta previa.Complete placenta previa is a high-risk subgroup of placenta previa associated with poor prognosis for mother and fetus.
