The first seven years of Semanario Pintoresco , under Mesonero Romanos, have been reviewed. The image of women portrayed in its texts and engravings has been used to determine the idea of the ideal women reader the magazine projects: the family mother, in a city context and with a conservative mindset. She is contrasted with the heroine of novels and plays in Mesonero’s antiromantic ideas.
