Impact of Dynamic Shading in cSi PV Modules and Systems for Novel Applications

2019
Integration in infrastructure, landscape, and urban environments is a growing application for PV In these situations, integrated PV will likely operate in a very dynamic set of illumination conditions. For example, PV integrated in and along roadways will need to deal with passing vehicles. PV integrated on cars, trains, or boats, will also experience a very dynamic set of irradiances. While conventional PV modules react to these changes almost immediately, power components for systems have not been optimized to deal with rapidly changing conditions. We have developed a new set of experimental and modelling tools to first quantify the impact of dynamic shade on a specific system and then to understand better the limits and types of shading that lead to the largest decrease in performance in order to better optimize these new PV systems for dynamic and novel applications.
