Cross patch electromagnetic band gap incorporated with rectangular patch microstrip antenna

2008
Electromagnetic band gap structure (EBG) has becoming attractive in antenna community due to the unique properties especially to suppress the propagating of surface wave within the antenna substrate in specific frequency ranges. Nowadays, the number of researcher in this field has increase rapidly and various papers have been published. EBG structure generally used as artificial ground plane in antenna design instead of using flat metal ground plane for enhances performance. The basic EBG structure that has been used for reference is based on mushroom like structure consist square patch metallic lattice grounded by vias. The structure is equivalent to LC filter circuit which has a stop band in certain operating frequency. This paper discussed and analyzed the properties of the antenna with and without cross patch EBG structure as an artificial ground plane in simulation and measurement. The new structure of EBG has been designed, simulated, fabricated, and tested before integrate the structure with microstrip patch antenna.
