Coupling of a 2D Heterostructure to a Photonic Polymer Waveguide via Mode-center Encapsulation

2021
2D materials such as monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit distinct excitonic properties that give rise to a strong and tuneable optical response [1] . Integration of monolayer TMDs’ into photonic waveguides as active elements is being intensely pursued. One of the primary challenges is to maximize coupling between the waveguide’s mode and the TMD. Most solid-state platforms are limited to surface placement of the emitter adjacent to the mode, where coupling is mediated only by the evanescent field [2] .
