A Nephrotic Syndrome in the Dog, Treated with Prednisone

Summary A nephrotic syndrome in a three year old male bobtail dog is described. It was characterized clinically by extensive subcutaneous edema, affecting the ears among other sites. After treatment with relatively large daily doses of prednisone (about 1 mg/kg) the edema disappeared fairly soon. Considerable reduction of protein loss in the urine was also observed, coupled with reduced hypoalbuminemia. The serum protein pattern typical for the nephrotic syndrome could no longer be distinguished after five months. Only the hyperlipemia became more marked. Special attention in the discussion is given to the pathogenetic importance of aldosterone in the development of edema. Zusammenfassung Ein nephrotisches Syndrom beim Hund, behandelt mit Prednison Es wird ein nephrotisches Syndrom bei einem dreijahrigen Bobtail-Ruden beschrieben. Das klinische Bild wurde durch ausgedehnte subkutane Odeme, unter anderem an den Ohrmuscheln, bestimmt. Nach Behandlung mit Prednison in hohen Dosen (± 1 mg pro kg Korpergewicht), verschwanden die Odeme schnell. Auch konnte ein erheblicher Ruckgang der Proteinurie festgestellt werden, die von einer weniger schweren Hypoalbuminamie begleitet war. Das fur das nephrotische Syndrom charakteristische Serumeiweisbild war nach funf Monaten nicht mehr nachzuweisen. Nur die Hyperlipamie verschlimmerte sich. Auf die pathogenetische Bedeutung des Aldosterons fur die Odembildung wird naher eingegangen. Desde el punto de vista clinico, se registraron edemas extensos, ante todo en las orejas, en el prepucio y en las articulaciones tarsianas. Tras el tratamiento con prednisona (1 mg/kg de peso en vivo por via oral durante 4 semanas) ya desaparecieron los edemas al cabo de una semana, aproximadamente. Disminuyo la eliminacion proteinica con la orina, amenguando la hipalbuminemia. El espectro seroproteinico tipico para la nefrosis no se pudo hallar mas 5 meses despues. Solo la hiperlipemia se encontraba acentuada en este tiempo. Discutese la importancia patogenica de la aldosterona en la formacion de los edemas.
