Survey on the estrogen activity in organic extracts of water body from the Ganzhou reach of Ganjiang River

2009
Objective To comprehend the pollution status by endocrine disrupting chemicals in Ganjiang River, thereby provide a scientific basis for the prevention and control of the pollution in Ganzhou River. Methods Water samples were collected at three sites located at the upstream, midstream and downstream from the Ganzhou reach of Ganjiang River in high-and low-water season respectively, the organic substances were extracted, separated and condensed by macroporous resin XAD-2,then measure the activity of estrogen using cell proliferation assay in MCF-7 cells. Results The estrogen were found in all the water samples from the Ganzhou reach of Ganjing River, the activity was higher in the midstream and upstream than in the downstream, which were higher in river side and high-water season than that in the river center and low-water season, respectively. Conclusions The results suggested that the water body in Ganjiang River has been polluted by endocrine disrupting chemicals, and it should be quite urgent for making a corresponding prevention and control strategy.
