The types of problems that engineers normally solve are bounded by the derivationformation spectrum. In derivation-ty pe problems, the solution to the problem consists of identifying an outcome or hypothesis from a finite set of possible outcomes known to the problem solver. In formation-typ e problems, however, the problem solver only has the knowledge of how to form the solution.
