Future perspectives and concluding remarks

2021
Abstract In this chapter we briefly reflect on the theme of this book and emphasize how the fields of exercise science and sports medicine could benefit from more focus on epigenetics. Epigenetic factors are largely overlooked by research in these fields and perhaps we should focus more on how these processes differ between people and how they impact on their personal response to exercise. Finally, I suggest ways in which epigenetics might become more prominent in exercise science research. Ultimately, this might be exploited to produce better physical activity programs for the individual and a moving away from the “one size fits all” approach in which people are simply encouraged to do x amount of exercise for y amount of hours per week.
