Learning and Practice Environment

2020
The environment in which physicians learn, train, and ultimately practice medicine is a critical component in not only the advancement of clinicians, but also in their wellbeing. In order to teach, prepare, and retain clinicians in the ever-changing healthcare atmosphere, healthcare systems and physicians must continually adapt and work together to optimize this interaction. This chapter will examine the 12 domains of the learning and practice environment as outlined in the National Academy of Medicine’s Conceptual Model for Clinician Wellbeing and Resilience. Each domain will be evaluated with special regard to clinician wellness and resilience and identify factors that contribute to physician burnout, while also working to elucidate practical solutions to combat this epidemic plaguing physicians in all stages of their career.
