Achieving Beamforming using a Dual-fed Patch Antenna Array with FSS Transmit-array for 5G Base-station Applications

2019
In development of 5G communication systems, millimeter wave bands are needed to facilitate the targeted data rates at 10 Gbits/sec. In order to improve the efficiency of information delivery, multiplex techniques, such as space multiplexing and division, or beamforming, can be used. In this paper, 39 GHz band (37GHz~40.5GHz) FSS design with dual-polarized antenna array for small base-station applications is proposed. The passive dual-polarization effects of the antenna array are achieved by phase delays designed on the FSS transmit-array. Beamforming obtained from the polarization diversity can be widely applied in 5G base-stations. This design employs low-cost organic boards, the system costs are greatly reduced.
