Validity and Reliability Working Alliance Inventory (WAI) Instrument Indonesian Version

Introduction: Measurement of therapeutic alliance is needed to assure effectiveness of psychotherapy. Currently, there is no valid and reliable instrument to measure therapeutic alliance in Indonesia. This study aims to evaluate validity and reliability of Indonesian version of Working Alliance Inventory (WAI). Methods: This study was conducted in adult psychiatric clinic Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital from December 2016 to May 2017. Only psychotherapies with at least 3 sessions with same therapist were included. Content and construct validity were assessed. Cronbach’s alpha was used to assess internal consistency as a measure of reliability. Analysis was performed using SPSS version 20. Results: There were 99 patients and 18 therapists included in this study. Among the 100 psychotherapy sessions, 54 were supportive psychotherapy, 20 were cognitive-behavioral therapy, and 26 were psychodynamic psychotherapy. For content validity, relevance coefficients for therapist and for patient were 1. For construct validity, all items in therapist version were valid; one item in patient version was not valid. Internal consistency produced Cronbach’s alpha 0.898 for patients and 0.929 for therapist. Disscussion: Indonesian version of WAI achieved good content validity. Instrumen for therapist also achieved construct validity, but 1 item in patient version was not valid. For reliability, Indonesian version of WAI achieved good internal consistency and reliable in measuring therapeutic alliance.
