The title compound, C10H6Cl3NO3, crystallizes with two independent mol­ecules in the asymmetric unit. The mol­ecular structure is stabilized by a short intra­molecular O—H⋯O hydrogen bond within the maleamic unit. In the crystal, each mol­ecule self-associates via N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds into chains, each running along the b axis. Two short inter­molecular Cl⋯O contacts [3.1267 (15) and 3.0523 (12) A] and C—H⋯O inter­actions inter­connect these chains into a three-dimensional network.
