Making and Publishing Knowledge in Research Institutes

2019
This chapter concerns making and publishing knowledge in the context of research institutes and discuss different research project types typical in research institutes. Finland is taken here as an example. Research institutes play a significant role in national innovation systems. Institutes are described as hybrid organizations between public and private spheres. They vary in structure, function, and performance across international and national borders. Yet, there is a lack of knowledge what type of knowledge research institutes produce and where it is published. Based on qualitative interview data, four different research project types were identified in the study, namely academic, research and development, professional, and research assignments. Different types of research projects produce different types of knowledge and outputs for different audiences.
