Optimizing freshwater data monitoring networks (design, collection, storage and dissemination) including links with modelling; country paper of the Netherlands

This paper starts with an overview of the existing hydrological monitoring networks in the Netherlands. The methods for network design and optimization, as used for the various types of monitoring networks, are discussed. Then, a general framework fornetwork design is proposed. The proposed methodology is illustrated with four examples of monitoring network design, each with different objectives. Next, a brief summary is given of the on-going research in network design in the Netherlands. Finally, recommendations for future developments are given.
