Towards 1 Billion Sensors: Distributed Fiber Sensing as a Pervasive IOT Contributor

Fiber Optic Sensing creates thousands of virtual sensors over long distances. In 2017 we recorded 3 million sensors providing temperature, strain or acoustics covering >30,000km. This paper introduces these technologies and plots a future of >1bn of connected sensors.
