Big network changes for Bern

2009
An independent company owned by the city of Bern, Bernmobil operates tram, bus and trolleybus services in the city of Bern. Plans are afoot to redesign the tramway network with the replacement and expansion of the existing fleet. Diesel buses are being replaced by biogas buses, using biogas produced by the local waste water treatment plant. Drivers will be trained in environmentally friendly driving. Appropriate access for handicapped people will be guaranteed on every vehicle, and dynamic passenger information will be available at stops and on the vehicles. Future developments include infrastructure improvements including a new railway station to connect the extension of a tram line with a suburban railway to the south of the city in an area with huge new housing potential. Other tram lines will be extended and some bus lines will be replaced. A new environmentally friendly and very quiet trolleybus line will serve Bern's biggest hospital. Bernmobil will also be building a new tram depot in the north-east of the city, and will be tendering for several two existing and several new bus lines.
