SERVING THE CASUAL USER IN A USER FRIENDLY SMARTCARD SYSTEM : AN AUSTRALIAN PERSPECTIVE

This paper will address the challenges of the occasional user, by reference to current and proposed developments in smartcard ticketing in Australasia. It defines the occasional user of public transport in Australian cities, analyses the characteristics and different segments of this market and identifies their specific ticketing requirements. This paper will address the development and marketing of ticketing products designed to meet the needs of occasional users, the potential role of disposable smart cards and the implications of the development of open smart card standards on the way in which occasional users are accommodated within Australasian smartcard systems.
