TRANSPORT-LAND USE RELATIONS IN RESTRUCTURING METROPOLITAN AREAS: IMPLICATIONS FOR AIR QUALITY IN CHICAGO AND STOCKHOLM. IN: SOCIAL CHANGE AND SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT

2002
U.S. legislation that includes the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991, and the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century, has highlighted the connection between transportation, air quality and land use. The Swedish environmental policy, spelled out in Communication Committee in 1997, expresses the goals related to reductions of emissions, impacts of air pollution on human health, noise, natural and cultural qualities as well as natural resources. The aim of this research is to compare the transport/land use relationship in Chicago and Stockholm from the standpoint respective environmental legislation.
